Before our experts arrive, however, there are some DIY diagnostics and other items homeowners can inspect to help resolve common issues:

• Check Your Thermostat – Is the thermostat correctly set to the right mode (heat, cool, auto, etc.) and desired temperature? With battery-operated thermostats, sometimes issues are solved simply by a fresh set of batteries.
• Check the Power Supply – Ensure the power switch on or near the unit is turned on and check that the corresponding circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped at the breaker box.
• Inspect Air Filters, Vents, and Registers – Check your system’s air filter and change it out for a clean one if it’s dirty or hasn’t been replaced in more than one month. Be sure all air vents and registers in your home are open, unblocked, and clean—furniture, rugs, or other obstacles blocking airflow can cause issues with your system’s ability to evenly cool your home.
• Check the Outdoor Unit – With split systems, inspect the outdoor unit to ensure it’s clear of obstructions such as leaves, sticks, bird or animal nests, dirt, and other debris.
• Look for Error Codes – Some newer, modern AC systems include digital displays that show error codes when a problem occurs. Refer to your owner’s manual to make sense of any codes you see.
• Try a System Reset – Turn the system’s power off at the breaker for one minute before turning it back on or, if your unit has one, use the reset button to try restoring the system’s default settings.
